ID fraud hits the rich and famous

Worryingly, fraudsters don’t even need genuine ID or details to cause problems.

Thieves cut a picture of Ricky Gervais from the back of a DVD box and stuck it into a fake passport, giving them enough identification to siphon almost £200,000 from his bank account.

They planned to convert the cash into gold bars using the false Gervais identity but were thwarted by a suspicious bullion dealer: he couldn’t believe the comedian would ever buy that much gold and called the police.
